I am so thankful for the opportunity to have been a student at Lutheran Summer Music. I have grown in so many ways from this experience, not only musically, but as a person.

LSM students form an intentional community where all can thrive and make lifelong friends. Building a community where all feel supported allows a deeper level of musical growth, as students learn to respect, trust, and value one another.

Ways that community is built at LSM include:

  • Dorm life, where students live with their peers in small groups led by a caring residence counselor.

  • A choice of daily recreation activities that encourage a break from a rigorous musical schedule, including sports, crafts, board games, and more.

  • Weekly large group activities that involve all students, such as the LSM Talent Show and Dance.

  • Off-campus excursions and Field Trips. Past destinations include National Parks, Amusement Parks, and Beach Days.

  • Leadership opportunities including the Dorm Council, where students can represent their peers and help choose and plan activities at LSM.

Worship is central to daily life at LSM. Our chaplain provides spiritual leadership and creates a supportive community where faith - regardless of religious background - can be explored and the Lutheran church's tradition of musical excellence is celebrated.  Students have the opportunity to participate in the worship life of LSM in many different ways.  The three primary worship events at LSM are:

  • Morning Prayer: A typical Morning Prayer service involves a hymn, a reading, a short message and singing Carl Schalk's Luther’s Morning Prayer as a community.

Watch Luther's Morning Prayer >

  • Evening Prayer: This half-hour service opens with Abendmusik (German for “Evening Music”), involves a sung liturgy, a reading, and a musical offering, usually given by the Chapel Choir, the Handbell Choir, or another faction of our community.

  • Sunday Eucharist:  The service begins with Morgenmusik (Morning Music), and follows the pattern of traditional Lutheran worship.  Each summer, a full Bach Cantata is performed in the context of worship by students and faculty together.

Where do the students live?

Students live in double-occupancy, air-conditioned rooms in a dormitory on the Valparaiso University campus. Students are assigned to “counseling groups” and live under the supervision of a caring residence counselor.

How do I get to and from LSM if I am flying in and out of Chicago?

LSM offers a charter which stops at both Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Chicago Midway (MDW) airports for an additional fee. It is generally good advice to arrive at either airport before 2:30pm on Sunday, June 28th**. The shuttle will begin at O'Hare, stop at Midway, and end up at Valparaiso University. There will also be a shuttle that leaves Valparaiso University on July 12th (for half-session students) and again on July 26th (for full-session students), stopping at each airport as necessary.  This is a private charter that LSM contracts for delivery to/from Valparaiso University.

**(Details will emerge later with exact pickup times for the shuttle)

Why should I choose LSM?

  • A Supportive Community. You will be musically challenged by our faculty, but you'll also find a nurturing environment. Cut-throat competition is set aside in favor of personal achievement. We are here to celebrate your musical gifts and work together in  musical excellence for high quality performance experiences during Festival Week.

  • A Center for Performance. Daily recitals let you experience excellence in performance. Our amazing faculty return year after year because they treasure the opportunity to both teach and perform. You will learn from the outstanding performances you witness, and then you will become the performer in solo, chamber and ensemble settings.

  • A National Community. Our students, faculty and staff come from across the country and around the world. The diversity of our community brings voices and perspectives you will not find with a local or regional program.

  • A Faith-Based Experience. Spiritual growth is encouraged and nurtured at LSM. We intentionally link music and worship to foster a bridge between your spiritual life and your musical life. Morning and Evening Prayer welcome all of us into a community of hope, forgiveness and musical celebration.

  • A Superb Pre-College Experience. Live in a dorm with roommates, turn to a trained counselor who lives right on your floor for advice and ideas, manage your own daily schedule, and still find plenty of time for fun and friendship. LSM is a great glimpse into college life- plus you will qualify for college scholarships through our Collegiate Partnership!
